Annual Heater Maintenance should be done BEFORE any heater, heat pump, solar system ... is fired up. For Propane or Natural Gas Heaters the following things should be done: 1.) Make sure ALL plants and trees are cut back away from the top of the heater, the heater sides, ... and all debris, leaves, ... in the equipment area are completely cleared away. 2.) Have any trees or bushes cut back so that NOTHING extends past the following parameters: a.) Trees or Bushes < 5' tall cut back 5' or > from heaters edge. b.) Trees or Bushes < 5' tall cut back 7.5' or > from heaters edge. c.) Trees or Bushes > 10' tall cut back 10' or > from heaters edge. d.) Trees or Bushes > 20' tall cut back 15' or > from heaters edge. e.) Trees or Bushes > 40' tall cut back 20' or > from heaters edge. You get the idea. In Phoenix, one wind storm can blow debris a long way. Heater fires are more common than you might think. 3.) Have the top of the heater pulled off and all of the dirt and debris vacuumed off the top of the unit. (Reassemble) 4.) have the bottom tray pulled out and have all dirt, debris, ... vacuumed out and Reassemble. For all other heater types, the following should be adequate. That said, check your owners manual to be sure: 1.) Make sure ALL plants and trees are cut back away from the top of the heater, the heater sides, ... and all debris, leaves, ... in the equipment area are completely cleared away. |
