How Do I Adjust My Pools Water Circultion? / How Should I Adjust My Pools Return Lines?

Improper Water Circulation

Improper water circulation probably causes about 65% of all cloudy water problems, with most of the rest being problems with operating times, filters and backwash valves. Please read the following carefully:

Note: The Following are Ideals. I am aware that your Pools Design might Prevent proper Water Circulation, and that you may have to live with this Handicap. Some problems "Usually" not related to design, that you can usually solve on your own are:

1.) You can adjust your pools suction so that 3/4 of the Suction coming from the Main Drain. (Note: Spa Drains should be "cracked" open for the same reasons. Dirty water has a tendency to settle out and move towards the drains unless you ruin this effect with floor heads or suction side cleaners.)

2.) 1/4 (Max) of All Suction should be Coming from the Skimmer (Allowing for the cracked Spa Suction, of course. Total spa and skimmer suction should be at a max of about 1/4 total suction. Again, suction side cleaners throw all of this off.)

3.) All Filtered Water is Returned to the Pool Via Return Eyeballs to Form a Clockwise Rotation (Northern Hemisphere), with each Eyeball adjusted to form a ripple on the Pool's Surface as close to the Wall as is possible, and about 3 Feet away from the Eyeball itself.

The above is how you adjust suction and returns if you want the greatest water clarity and still want some surface cleaning. If you just want the water clarity as quick as is possible, shut off all suction but the suction to the main drain. (If this will blow all the debris right past the skimmer, or leave eddies near the steps, and these issues can be resolved by completely reversing the flow direction, do so. The Corellas Effect is negligible, and, the minimal improvement in circulation is not worth the major issues caused by eddies, or blowing debris past the skimmer.)

NOTE: If you do not have a way of getting the suction to the drain, and all the suction goes to the skimmer, you are only cleaning and filtering the top 12" of water. Your pool will turn cloudy, and then green, if you do not remedy this situation.

TWO OF THE BIGGEST PROBLEMS IN THE AREA OF PROPER CIRCULATION ARE RELATED TO SUCTION SIDE AND FLOOR HEAD CLEANING SYSTEMS.
